Invitation to Germany Explaination

A comment on the content and format of

INVITATION TO GERMANY

The “Table of Contents, Chapter” shows the page number where that Chapter will be found.

To create the “Table of Contents with Vignettes” we gathered each and every subject heading in the book, and appended a short Vignette from that section. A glance will give the reader an example of the content, and the page number shows where to find “The Rest of the Story.”

% A subject heading with a little house,
indicates the name of a town, a village or a city.

CHAPTER MAPS
In both the “Table of Contents with Vignettes,” and in the body of the book, at the beginning of each chapter a map of the country (with the chapter location highlighted) helps orient the reader to the area being discussed.

Our Travel Credentials

When we describe a cathedral, an amphitheater, an ancient beautiful building, or a fantastic scenic point, perhaps it helps if the reader knows we have seen many such places in other locations, so we have something with which to compare them.

Jim’s years (starting in the late 1940’s) in the computer business (sales, consulting, technical writing, training) included about 1,500 airplane flights to 70 cities in 37 of the United States. His Merchant Marine ship spent a few days at Manila and Calcutta, and his ship was in Singapore’s harbor on his 18th birthday.

During nine trips we visited Europe for nearly 1,000 days, and spent at least one night in 452 different places in 30 countries. Included are 605 nights in our Recreational Vehicle in 406 different places in 26 European countries.

In the RV our clothes are on a hanger; there are goodies in the refrigerator; and we know who used the toilet last. We travel with the concept that if we have no schedule, we aren’t late; if we don’t care where we are, we aren’t lost; if we have no itinerary we’re exactly where we ought to be.

Years of travel have taken us to nearly 75 countries and major islands on 5 continents (North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa). Included are 49 of the United States, 10 towns and cities in Mexico, 9 Canadian Provinces, 29 European countries, 10 islands in the Pacific, 11 in the Mediterranean, and 7 islands in the Caribbean Sea.

Cruise ships and ferry boats, with us aboard, have departed or arrived at 123 different cities on 5 Continents, on about 50 countries or major islands (including a 7 week freighter trip to the South Pacific). As Emmy often says, “No wonder I’m tired!”
