Yellowstone, Bears

(3 photos)
Beggars come in all sizes and shapes in Yellowstone. It’s best to follow the advice of the Rangers, and stay far away from the bears. One time Emmy had thrown several slices of bread to the bears, but when a small one approached the car, she just stuck the slice out the partially opened window. The bear cub suddenly reached up and caught the top of the open window with his claw. Luckily I had the motor running, and the transmission in gear, so slowly started to leave. The bear took the hint and let loose, before any damage was done. That is our 1965 Olds, with the large rear-view mirror — we were towing our camping trailer. The incident with the bear, mentioned above, was during an earlier visit, with a different car.

We remember that during one visit, in the middle of the night in our trailer in a Yellowstone campground, we heard a loud noise, then looked out the window and watched as several bears tried to snitch a meal from the specially designed — bear proof — trash cans, right next to our trailer. We could have reached out the window and touched them. Well, maybe we could have touched them once, before they snitched our hand.
