Vignettes from Jim and Emmy's years of travel

Little Countries

San Marino

San Marino 2.jpg

Rolling hills are sprinkled with the houses of San Marino, and Italy in the distance. The main part of the country surrounds the northeastern base of the mountain, but the upper town consists of many blocks of nice homes, as well as block after block and level after level of stores, hotels, banks, churches, and all the rest. Everything is on the steep hillside, and is reached by either walking steep switch-back streets and sidewalks, or by climbing flights of stairs. One street, half-way up the hill, has the rememberable name of “della Cella Bella.” San Marino is very much a tourist destination and is kept neat and clean, more like Disneyland than Italy.
