Metal Odds and Ends

In 1991, in Hameln, Germany, the Journal says, “The flea market was interesting, and by hindsight, it was as nice as we saw anywhere this whole trip." We bought a long copper shoe horn, 3 small bowls, and a little book about Cathedrals, all for a total of $7. Now, what ever happened to that book? The shoe-horn is about 20” long, and is useful.
On the tourist literature it says, “Sagenhaftes HAMELN Rattenfängerstadt und mehr,” or “A town worth talking about, incredible Hameln, the rat-catcher-city and more.”
The Pied Piper play, called the “Die Rattenfängersage” or “The rat catcher fable” (or something like that), lasted about 1/2 hour. They had a lot of people dressed like townspeople of centuries ago, with some children dressed like children, and many children dressed (and crouched) like rats. Since we knew the story, it wasn’t hard to follow. As someone (three guesses who!) said, “Hameln, the home of the Piper and the former home of rats and kids.”

You are absolutely correct, I don’t remember where the candle snuffer was found.

We drove along the south lake shore, then onto a ferryboat to cross Lake Constance (Bodensee) to the delightful town of Meersburg, Germany — we've done that two different years. They are having some kind of festival, complete with a band and crowds of people. Drove into the little streets, and were able to back around a corner into a one-way street, and parked in an almost legal place. Sometimes it’s a parking place, often it’s just a parking space.
There we bought a “food warmer” thing. The top of this food warmer gadget is about 6” in diameter and the lower level has a place for a candle to supply heat.

In Brussels, Belgium there’s a large square that’s been used as the flea-market for many years. It looks like a place where they sell real live “fleas.” We bought a few small items (drawer handles and door hardware). If you went to the house where we lived 25 years ago, you would find several beautiful door handles, a couple of which were purchased in Brussels, and a couple in Greenwich, a suburb of London, England, and home of the famous Greenwich Observatory.
We then went to the Brussels antique market a few blocks away, in another open square nearer downtown, where things are very different and much more expensive, and we didn’t buy a thing.

If I was to say we bought these coasters in Dinkelsbühl, Germany, I’ll bet you can’t prove me wrong.

We bought these nice brass clothes hangers in the Flea Market in Paris, France. The only problem is, the rod in our closet is too large for the hooks on the hangers, but anyway they look nice when displayed on a shelf.
