Hirsau, The old Abbey

HirsauArchChurch.jpg
The old Abbey of Hirsau, a couple of miles north of Calw, was a Benedictine sanctuary around the year 1000, and has been a ruin for 300 years, since the Palatinate War of 1692. Many red stone walls remain, and in one spot a three-story ruin (no roof) has several tall trees growing inside those walls.

In the midst of all the ruins, a small Gothic church is still in use — we have no idea what its age may be.
