Germany

Saarburg, Canal & Waterfall

In the center of town, the Leukrivlet (stream) flows between houses and restaurants built on rocks overlooking the falls. Germans, and all Europeans, love to spend time at sidewalk cafes and outdoor restaurants, usually located along a main street. In Saarburg, they break with tradition just a little — the cafes are located on both sides of the stream, the falls, and the water wheels a block from the main shopping street.

Steep vineyard-covered hills rise directly from the sidewalk in the heart of town, and a cable car carries tourists to the hill overlooking this beautiful scene.

The stream is diverted through a series of wooden sluices onto one of several water wheels, before it cascades thirty-five feet and joins the Saar River nearby. A delightful sight.
