Mettlach, Schloss Saareck

The vine-covered Schloss Saareck (“Saar” for the river, “Eck” for corner, or bend in the Saar) across the river from the old Abbey, was a von Boch home years ago. It now serves as the guest house and banquet hall for official visitors to the Villeroy & Boch factory, where they make porcelain dishes, ceramic tile, etc.

On the hillside above the river, Schloss Ziegelberg, another old von Boch home, was an orphanage prior to WW II. It was recently remodeled as the museum for products made over the years at the magnificent old factory, and a beautiful restaurant was built in the cellar of Schloss Ziegelberg. On display are some ceramic floor tiles, representative of those produced many years ago. In Cousin Bärbel’s home, the long hall from front door to back, was tiled decades ago with these same “museum” tiles.
