Toledo, El Greco

Toledo.jpg

I am not positive that this is the painter El Greco’s home, but it’s at least a photo in that neighborhood. El Greco, about the most famous Spainish painter, was born in 1541, with the name Domenikos Theotokopulos, in Candia, Crete (Greece). He worked with great masters on Creta, in Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo in Spain. El Greco was his adopted nickname which meant ‘The Greek” in Spanish. While in Madrid, we had visited the Prado Museum with its Van Dyke, Rubens, Goya, and El Greco paintings

We visited the house where El Greco lived and worked for years, on one of Toledo's most popular streets, Santo Tomé. Many paintings were on display. In one set of 12 pictures, each of the Apostles had small parts of each picture unfinished. For example, there would be a hand, but no fingers.

While we were there, some important looking government officials arrived in a limousine, complete with guards and guides.
