Bernkastel-Kues

About forty-five river miles on the Mosel River, from Trier is Bernkastel-Kues. Actually two little towns — Bernkastel on the east, and Kues on the west side of the river, or are they on the north and south side? Perhaps the left and right banks would be more correct. It really is a curvy river.

001 Cobblestone, Bernkastle.jpg

All that is needed to build a cobblestone street or walkway, is a man, a bucket of sand, a pile of stones, and a hammer. It can take any length of time, and any number of workers can participate.

The cobblestone surface will last forever, and repairs to the street or sidewalk, or the utilities underneath, are easy to do. A cement or asphalt road requires huge expensive equipment, not so many workers, repairs are sometimes difficult, and certainly more visible.

Among the disadvantages of cobblestone — it makes a readily available, easily obtainable weapon when a mob decides to attack their government.

Bernkastle City View.jpg

Bernkastel’s town hall, the market fountain, and the timber-framed houses date from the early 1600s. These are exceptional examples of medieval market towns, with 400-year-old half-timbered buildings.
