Ortonova, Church and Tower

We finally found signs directing us to the hilltop village of Ortonova — what a drive up and up an extremely narrow switch back road! The only place to park was the bus stop, and the bus was due shortly. The bus is small, a special size bus, much narrower than usual, or it wouldn’t make it up here very many times.

We drove on between a building and an old tower (only a couple of inches to spare, on each side), and we didn’t know if there was a place to park then turn around on the other side of town. We parked and walked throughout the little town, past the church and then what seemed to be the school yard. Emmy gave some pencils and pens, labeled “Disneyland,” to some Ortonova school children. They sure did know of Disneyland!

We turned around and followed the little city bus down the hill from Ortonova. He and we had to get off the road into the ditch each time we met a small car, but we made it.

In spite of the road and the driving conditions, we couldn't resist another visit to Ortonova the following day (and again a few years later). Emmy was thrilled when the school children she had given the Disneyland pencils, remembered her, then smiled and waved to her.
