Vignettes from Jim and Emmy's years of travel

Germany

Naumburg, Marketplace

Naumburg, Marketplace.jpg

In dozens of European cities we saw large outdoor markets that were just filled with every kind of food one can imagine. Usually by mid-day the markets are closed, the area is swept and hosed down, and the trash has been hauled away. The market place is now the location for street side cafes, a parking lot, or just to be enjoyed as the town square.

While we drove through this part of Germany, we saw a sign that proclaimed a Holiday Inn was to be built nearby. Another set of advertisements declared a concert by the “Beach Brothers” would be held in a few days. We have no idea if that is the same Beach Brothers we hear about in the US, or if someone else was using the same name.

At a store we visited one day, we talked to a man and wife who spoke some English. They invited us to spend the night in their driveway in a town nearby. We followed all the directions the best we could, and asked three people for help, but try as we might, never found their home. We drove on to a campsite a few miles further on.

Just outside one town we watched a truck with a funny set of rotating brushes mounted on an "arm" that reached to posts that lined the roadside, and scrubbed the little reflectors on the post. Never saw that elsewhere.
