Vignettes from Jim and Emmy's years of travel

Eleanor's 1931 Travel Verse

Eleanor, 23-August 5 Edinburgh, Glasgow

August 5

EDINBURGH

I've seen monuments and statues to commemorate the war.
In France I saw a hundred and in Germany some more.
Some were beautiful and moving, some uninteresting, and trite,
But they all proclaimed, "Remember! Through all time recall the fight."

But on Edinburgh's summit, founded on the living stone,
Stands a consecrated temple to the heroes Scotland's knows,
Consecrated to the future, to the time when war shall cease,
Built in everlasting peace.

"HE HAS DELIVERED OUR SOUL LIKE A
BIRD FROM THE SNARE OF THE FOWLER”

August 6

EDINBURGH TO GLASCOW

The tour at eve had et its fill
When set the moon upon the hill
And deep its midnight lair had made
In Edinburgh castle's shade.

Next morn in spite of threatening rain
They took the bus that caught the train.
Till stopping at Loch Vermacchar
They transferred to a motor car.

But when the Brig of Twit was won
The head most motor rode alone,
The other car had had to stop
Some sprays of heather blue to crop.

They paused about by Lock Achray
Then with the Autobus once more,
They crossed the Trossachs to the shore.
Of Loch Katrine where stood a boat,
To take the passengers afloat.
To see the lake's most splendid vices
The misty slopes of Beir Verne.

And turning round a little while,
They watched the green of Eleis isle.
From Loch Katrine they had to go
Across a hill, tally-ho.

And then another change they made
To catch a boat at Inversnaid.
And when that boat had slid to dock
They caught a stream tram at Bellock.
And as the lake slid out of view
They bade Ben Lomond's height adieu.

They took, through Glasgow's traffic fuss
A double-decker motor bus.
Which served two other tours as well
And landed them at Grand Hotel.
There the brave tourist, side by side
Lay down and slept like brothers tired.
