Eleanor's 1931 Travel Verse

Eleanor, 13-July 15 Naples

July 15

NAPLES

From our front window we survey,
A boulevard with motors gay.
And buggies running all the day, along the sea.
A vapor column, curling white
Still rises from the mountain's height,
Vesuvius, the fairest sight of Napoli.

A long cortege of limousines
Inspects the most important scenes,
The city glows with wealth and means — Prosperity.
'Till of a sudden round we turn,
And in the narrow streets we learn
How thronging millions whirl and churn, in Napoli.

Along the lobster mart we ride,
Where fish of every sort abide.
The washing swings from side to side,
No street is free.
And words will not avail to tell
Of all the things the markets sell.
Oh, how the onions smell, in Napoli.
