Vignettes from Jim and Emmy's years of travel

Eleanor's 1931 Travel Verse

Eleanor, 08-July 6 The Pyrenees

July 5 & 6

THE PYRENEES

Lourdes to Lorichon to Ax-les-Thermes,
The trip across the Pyrenees
Was most enchanting,
The fields of grain and rows of trees
On hillsides slanting,
The sun light gleaming on the snows,
The goats and cattle.

The frequent Monuments to those
Who died in battle,
The catholic priest in robes of black,
The mountain peasant,
The children grinning by the track,
All sights were pleasant.

The road wound up nine thousand feet
Through mountain passes.
The air was thick, though fresh and sweet,
With soft cloud masses.

About the pinks and edelweiss
We all were crazy.
The fox-glove and rose were nice
and mountains daisy.
But oh, the road ran up such heights
So straight and narrow.

With fears that terrify my nights,
It froze my marrow.
I thought the eagle in the sky,
Of my flesh would leave small traces.
I cursed this natal day when I,
Was born to fear high places.
