Eleanor's 1931 Travel Verse

Eleanor, 01-June 18 Portland to New York City

FROM HOME IN PORTLAND, TO NEW YORK CITY

On Tuesday night with last adieus to Mother in her bed,
My bags packed, to the station in a yellow cab I sped,
There Harriet and Gertrude, Randall, Katharine Jane and Jack,
Came to cheer my flurried moments till the train should clear the track,

Bringing magazines, books, perfume,
Adding candy to my bundles, and it didn't stop at that,
For Lacey and her mother brought their greetings for my way,
Then I embarked, and thus concluded my journey's first bright day.

ON THE TRAIN

The train jogs, and its hard to write,
My ears are cracking from the height,
The only thing of note today,
Has been the flowers along the way,
The scenery at times was grand,
But I've seen that on every hand.
Bur flowers, pink, orange, cream and blue,
Afford a thrill that's fairly new.

This day went by as train days go.
I read a while, and tried to sew.
The temperature was just a fright
I read a while and tried to write.
I watched for miles posts, hay and sheep,
I read a while, and tried to sleep.

CHICAGO

The change at Chicago was not hard to do.
I saw that my baggage was going straight through.
This day I am sure is the hottest day yet.
I've exuded at least twenty gallons of "perspiration!"

June 20

CHICAGO TO NEW YORK

The spires of Taylor rising tall
Reduced me quite to tears
For I have not seen Fayor Hall
For over fifteen years

One spire against an azure sky
That flickered passed the car,
I wept for college days gone by
And all that meant Bryn Mawr.
