Vignettes from Jim and Emmy's years of travel

Gdansk, Home of Lech Walęsa

PL_Gdansk_Wal.jpg

Lech Walęsa was president of Poland from 1990 to 1995. Walęsa rose to international fame in August 1980 as the leader of the independent trade union Solidarity, which played a decisive role in bringing down Communism not only in Poland but throughout Eastern and Central Europe.

We drove around the city if Gdansk, then stopped at the home of Lech Welesa. We forgot to ask if this was his house for many years, or just since he became an important man in the government. It appeared much bigger than most homes in Gdansk, and now it has a high fence complete with a small guard house and TV cameras for surveillance. I got out of the car to take some pictures, and the guard asked us to move on.
