Gdansk, Zuraw Gdanski (Crane)

PL_Gdansk_Crane_tower.jpg

As we walked along the harbor in Gdansk, we passed the Gdansk Crane (Zuraw) building, that was constructed in the mid 1400s. It is the oldest preserved harbour crane in Europe, and was once an important ship reloading station. It is now a tourist attraction, but we didn’t notice if it is still used to load and unload ships.

Inside, there used to be huge wooden wheel moved by power of human legs. The Crane was used not only for loading and unloading ships, but for putting up ship masts.
