Santoríni, Thíra

GR_Santorini_Thira.jpg

The island of Thíra, otherwise known as Santoríni, has a surface area of 75 square kilometers and a population of about 10,000. One side of the island is the remnant of the volcanic eruption, the other side is full of fertile valleys producing wine and tomatoes. There are no lakes, rivers or many wells, water is imported or converted from sea water by desalination plants.

The main town, Thíra, is a picturesque village with narrow streets, white buildings, beautiful churches, and tourist stores by the hundreds. There are ruins of ancient civilizations on other parts of the island, but our ship would only be here for a couple of hours, so we had not enough time to visit there.

Some people insist that at the time of the demise of the original island, was also the demise of the mythical city of Atlantis which was said to have been created and built on top of the original mountain of Strogili. At least that's what some people say.
