Kosmás, Road Repairs Needed

As we left Leonidio, on the way to Kosmás, the road was terrible and it continued to rain, very hard. At one place we could see the Elóna Monastery, huddled against the rocks in a niche in the side of the cliff, overlooking this narrow valley. Soon the road was so bad that at a couple of places it had been washed away. Some kind Greek had placed small stones around one hole, to notify the next driver of the problem. The whole RV would fit in that emptiness.
The town of Kosmás was very nice, the recently renovated, or newly built, central marketplace had large trees shading a pleasant stone-paved square.
As we were leaving Kosmás, a camper from England blocked our way. The wife was sitting there, petrified, with eyes as big as saucers. She said the road they had just been on was unbelievable, and asked about the road we just came on. I assured her that while it's almost impassable, it is possible, and if they drove carefully, they could make it OK. I said the road we came on just had to be much worse than what they had already seen. She didn’t agree.
When we left town I found I had been wrong about the road, but that doesn’t mean she was right. In one way of thinking the road didn’t get worse, it just plain disappeared. For about five miles, in low gear and in heavy rain, sometimes at less than walking speed, we drove on dirt and over rocks, up and down chuck holes (they were big enough to drive the whole camper through, not just a tire or two), around boulders and trees, slipping in the mud with little rivers flowing in ruts formed by previous vehicles. Thank goodness it was downhill for us. Then suddenly the road was excellent.
