Wittenberg, Marketplace

From the marketplace in Wittenberg, also known as Lutherstadt, the Rathaus (City Hall), and another building with a tower, can be seen. When I visited inside the Rathaus, I sure wished I had a tape recorder. We have all heard comedians tell jokes, using a phony Germanic accent, and well, here it was for real, as the lady, on the telephone, was speaking German in a very authoritative manner. We have spent a lot of time in Germany with Emmy’s cousins and on our own, but never before or since have I heard a strident “speech” such as the one given by this lady. She could have been the star of “Saturday Night Live.”
A large statue of Martin Luther, stands in front of the Rathaus (City Hall). As we saw so many places in former East Germany, in the outdoor marketplace, in addition to dozens of booths and vehicles selling farm produce, there were huge rotisseries where hundreds of chickens turned and dripped and turned.
