Wittenberg, Stadtkirche

D_Wittenberg_Stadtkirche.jpg

The two steeples of the Stadtkirche (City Church), St. Mary's, the church where Martin Luther usually preached, can be seen from Wittenberg’s marketplace. Today the church is divided into two parts, the eastern part was built in 1280, and the sanctuary was added 100 years later. The church towers were originally topped by four-sided, gothic steeples.

In the yard on the north side of the church is a bust of Johannes Bugenhagen, the first evangelical pastor of Wittenberg. He was also the friend and confessor of Martin Luther. In addition, he had the courage to perform the wedding of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora.

The Castle Church in Wittenberg, a few blocks away, is where it is said that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door on October 31, 1517.
