Lübeck, The Rathaus

D_Lubeck_The_Rathau.jpg

Lübeck’s Rathaus (City Hall), started in 1230, has several spires, towers, arcades, and some funny little “hats” on the roof. Seen from the Marktplatz, the imposing southern wall has three turrets and two big round holes. They call them “grossen Windlöcher” or large wind holes, but they are just round holes through a wall that divides nothing and goes no where, but does so in a charming manner. On the Breite Strasse side of the Rathaus, there is an unusual covered stairway.
