Our photo of the 250-year-old Benedictine Abbey, with a beautiful Baroque façade, the Villeroy and Boch headquarters on the Saar River in Mettlach, Germany, brought this comment in a letter from Herr Wendelin Von Boch, “I have never seen such a good photograph of the Ancient Abbey.” When viewed from this bank of the river, the Abbey building dominates the view and fortunately blocks the sight of a half-mile of modern ceramic manufacturing factories beyond. Since this photo was snapped, the Saar River has been engineered into a canal with concrete retaining walls, and the trees and grassy banks have disappeared.

Hidden in the trees to the right is an unusual octagonal edifice, the Alter Turm (Old Tower), a portion of the former church of the Sepulchre of Saint Lutwinus, that has been standing for nearly 1000 years.

The company was founded in the 1720’s and has been in the old Benedictine Abbey for a 150 years or so.

Here's two views of the headquarters building after the River was made into a canal. These are not photographs, they are "snapshots" from our Video.
