Bad Doberan, Kindergarten

Kindergarten.jpg

From the end of WW II until the Berlin Wall came down, thousands of people left their property in East Germany, escaped to the West, but then when the Berlin Wall fell, many wanted their property back. The people who lived there at that time had purchased the property from the previous Government or another individual, perhaps have lived in the house for decades, but now here comes someone who says they are still the owner!

In one large beautiful house that had been abandoned in Bad Doberan, a kindergarten had been in operation for many years. When the owners returned from the West, they saw how the building was being used, and that the people had tried to keep it in good condition. The owners from the West noticed that the roof looked in bad shape, and the Bad Doberan people replied that they had no money to fix it. Eight days later, a new roof had been installed on the kindergarten by the (former?) owners from the West, and they let the Bad Doberan kindergarten continue. We visited 10 or 15 years ago, so we don’t know if the people from the West have reclaimed or retained ownership or just what, but at least they didn’t immediately throw out the people who have worked so hard all these years.
