While we walked up the hill to the Bamberg Cathedral, we actually walked past several antique shops without stopping. While we walked up the hill to the Bamberg Cathedral, we actually stopped to visit several antique shops. And since there were so many antique shops, both statements are correct!

The Cathedral in Bamberg has four spires, and is set on top of the hill. This Dom is partly Gothic in style, and most unusual. Usually the entrance to a Cathedral is on the west side, but here, the main entrance is the Princes’ Doorway, in the middle of the north side.

The most famous piece of art in this Cathedral is the “The Bamberger Reiter” or “The Knight,” created in the 1200’s by an unknown artist. We were expecting a life-sized statue standing on the floor somewhere, but finally we saw it, mounted on a pillar about ten feet above the floor level. Some of the most brilliant art treasures in Bamberg’s Cathedral were created by the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. There are examples of his work in at least a dozen cities, especially in Würzburg, where at one time, he was the mayor of the city.
