Boat Travel in Europe #5of5

Switzerland - across the Rhine River at Basel, round trip: Crossed the Rhine on a small ferry connected to a cable crossing high above the Rhine River. This cable kept the ferryboat from floating down the river in the rapid current.

Wales - Fishmonth, to Rosslare, Ireland: We were early—surprise — but had no problem getting on. The only time we have ever failed to get on a ferryboat when we wanted to, was when we already had a ticket and a reservation.

Yugoslavia - Hvar, Island of Hvar, to Split, Yugoslavia: The ferryboat went around and past other islands, and arrived in Split on time. Several boats were coming and going at the same time, and the three Captains were playing “chicken,” each trying to dock at one of the only two spots available, and our Captain lost. But we finally drove off the boat OK.

Yugoslavia - Kardeljevo, to the Island of Hvar: There were several vehicles in the line in front of us this morning, but we got on the 10:00 AM ferryboat to Sucuraj on the Island of Hvar.

Yugoslavia - Orebic, Peljesac Peninsula, to Korcula Island, Round Trip: We bought 25¢ tickets to the island and town of Korcula, a “who can imagine this exists” kind of city, founded by the Greeks, many centuries BC.

Yugoslavia - Trpanj, Peljesac Peninsula, to Kardeljevo: This peninsula extends in a northerly direction, somewhat parallel to the coast, so the ferryboat ride was much shorter than the drive would be.
