Campsites,Italy # 6of13
At Mestra, near Venice, we camped in the Rialto Campsite. We rested for a while then took the ten minute bus ride into Plaza Roma, walked to the Rialto Bridge, then on to St. Mark’s Square. Later we rode the vaporetto and the bus back to the campsite, and to bed by 10:30. Any visit to Venice is electrifying, exhilarating, breathtaking, and spectacular!
We drove to Livorno where the ferryboat leaves for Corsica, and spent the night in the nearby campsite. Next morning at the ferryboat dock, we found the information we had received in Nice, France, was incorrect. We had a voucher not a ticket. The man in charge said “Will arrange,” and would have if there had been room, but since enough cars with reservations, filled the Corsica ferry to overflowing, he couldn’t help us after all. After a couple of days in Florence, we sailed to Corsica.
We arrived at the campsite in Pisa early afternoon. It had been raining, and if our vacation was only two weeks long we would have kept on sightseeing, rain or no, but with our non-schedule, that’s not needed. After hamburgers and popcorn, we drove back into Pisa to see the tower and Cathedral lit up, then found they don’t turn on the lights until July. Our first reaction was to laugh when we saw the beautiful leaning tower, and our second reaction was how really, really impressive and majestic is the Tower of Pisa. Even if it was not leaning, it would be a superb tourist sight.
The road along the Amalfi Coast was right at the level of the water part of the time, hung on a cut in the side of the cliff the rest of the time. We drove back to sea level, then over the top of the hill to Sorrento, and found a campsite without too much trouble. The next morning the campsite manager was kind enough to drive us into town so we could catch the ferryboat to visit the Isle of Capri.
We have camped (twice) in Fusina, south of Venice. One year our campsite neighbors included people from Finland who were pleased to see pictures of our daughter-in-law, who was born in Loviisa, Finland. Another year we visited with Ross and Barbara, New Zealand Kiwi farmers, who had camped next to us for a few nights in Florence the previous week. One night at the Fusina campsite, the RV moved and bounced a lot. We never were sure whether it was the strong wind and rain storm, or if it really was the huge Venetian mosquitoes.
