Pompeii, House of Faun, Mosaic Floor

I_Floor_with_Optical_Illus.jpg

The best known house in Pompeii, The House of the Faun, is named for the statue of a dancing faun (some sort of mythological creature), and there’s a wall-mosaic depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and the Persian King Darius. This mosaic floor is in the Tablinum, or main entrance to the house. We have seen this pattern numerous times.

About the most memorable floor laid in an optical illusion pattern, that we remember, was located in the Cathedral in Padova. The Cathedral floor, laid with black and white tile, is such a perfect optical illusion pattern, we felt we had to be careful where we placed our feet, as we walked.
